Objective:
The course introduces the student to the various materials used in Structural Engineering Design and Construction and their properties. This will help them in their choice of materials for their construction projects.
Properties of materials used in structural engineering design and construction: concrete, timber, bricks (engineering and architectural), steel, admixtures and additives;
Manufacture, composition, types and properties of cement; Types and properties of aggregates: laboratory and practical work includes aggregate grading; batching concrete mix proportioning and mixing; properties of wet concrete, workability measurement, casting and testing of cubes.
Properties and applications of timber, types and characteristics of bricks and blocks, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
